Edwin A. Kayes
It is with great sadness and profound loss that we have to announce the passing of one of our founders, Edwin Kayes.
Edwin was a great friend and long-time colleague, from our early days together at SELabs, through Thorn EMI Datatech to Penny and Giles Data Systems.
In 1997, Edwin, Dave and I launched upon a joint venture using the name Somerdata, a choice from Edwin as a nod to our heritage and vision for the future.
Edwin’s drive and zest for life, following an early successful battle with cancer, gave us the confidence to try out new technologies, bringing some out-there ideas but always focussed on what the Customer wanted. Edwin’s greatest gift was standing in the Customers’ shoes and looking for solutions, however technically unlikely, that could solve their problem.
He realised that our background in Data recording could lead us to the DAB Broadcast market, creating some significant products that spread worldwide, and when he left the Company in 2009, it was to expand further his commitment to the DAB market, first for VDL in France and subsequently for Factum Radioscape in London. When he decided to start his own consultancy, Parbrook Consulting, we renewed our collaboration with his vision for an entirely new set of DAB products, which we continue to develop.
Sadly, the health problems of his early life gradually took their toll, but never daunted his spirit and he passed away on the 2nd March at Papworth.
We will remember him as the eternal optimist, a great family man and a lifelong friend.
Our sincerest condolences, love and best wishes go to wife Penny, and daughters Nicola, Eleanore and Olivia.
Rest in peace my friend.
